Squirrels

We specialise in wildlife control operations, including squirrel trapping and removal.  Alhtough based in Cambridgeshire we oprate across East Anglia

Squirrels can be a major pest problem in certain circumstances- they are notorious pest of domestic roof spaces, ceilings and attics. Once nesting or inhabiting the said space both the disturbance and damage caused can be large.

They can enter roof spaces via various paths e.g. climbing walls, jumping from nearby trees, along cables, from adjoining buildings. Once inside they will chew woodwork, remove insulation, strip electrical cabling.

The pest factor for squirrels comes from their destructive abilities i.e. chewing/gnawing. They are not important vectors of human diseases.

Confirmation of a squirrel problem is normally done via a visual sighting, although there are tell-tale signs of their presence. To the untrained eye squirrel droppings can look similar to rat droppings so be careful if you are using this as your sole identification factor.

Obviously when referring to squirrels here we are talking about the non-native grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) and not the lovely red squirrel.

Squirrels are normally resident in broadleaved or mixed woodlands but are now a very common resident of most urban areas and this is where they cause the majority of their problems.

The control of grey squirrels can be achieved with a variety of techniques:

  • Shooting (where safe and practical to do so)
  • Spring traps
  • Live capture traps

Grey squirrels can be controlled via poisoning but only with suitably approved baits and in compliance with various other legislation which governs when and where it can be employed.

We are happy to undertake squirrel removal and trapping throughout Cambridgeshire; if you have a major problem then we happily cover the whole of East Anglia.

As an aside the squirrel is also a marvelous thief from bird feeders- even the so called squirrel proof ones.
