There are two species common throughout the UK, namely the common wasp (Vespula vulgaris) and the german wasp (Vespula Germanica).
Wasps are social insects and form colonies around nests which are often found in soil banks, roof spaces, under roof tiles, in wall and tree cavities, in sheds etc etc. Because of this they are often associated with domestic housing.
Pest control for wasps is very seasonal due to the fact that it is only the single queen from each nest that over-winters. Wasp activity is then generally spotted from late spring-early summer onwards although their emergence is related to many factors.
As wasps visit dustbins, waste depots, dead animals and human food they may possibly spread disease. However, they are mainly known for their nuisance factor, especially in late summer when they become more irritable. Wasps can give a nasty sting and this only adds to our negative perception of them. If you have been stung please keep any eye on your symptoms as some people do have strong allergic reactions to stings which do need medical assistance.
Wasps are relatively easy to control, using a number of different commercially available insecticides, if access to the nest or nest area can be gained. Control of single adults in flight is highly unlikely to exert significant control on a nearby nest.
For wasp control we use a variety of products, such as:
- Residual sprays
- Dusts
- Aerosols
- Wasps pots and traps.
Although not generally necessary we can physically remove a treated wasp nest if need be- it is exceptionally rare that a treated nest is ever used again by another queen.
There are other species that can cause a nuisance problem and these are generally:
- Hornet
- Tree wasp
- Honey bee
- Solitary bees
- Mason bees
- Bumble bees
We always try to not destroy bee colonies and suggest if you do have a swarm that you contact your local bee keeper. In certain circumstances it may become necessary to treat bee’s and we can advise on this if required.
